Everyone has a relative like this, I'm sure.

My father always wears a wristwatch. Well, the one that he's been wearing had the battery run down. Instead of taking that wristwatch off to get a new battery, he put on a second wristwatch that he owns.

So, right now, he's wearing two wristwatches, one of which is accurate twice a day...

Oh, yeah?! Well, *my* dad wears *two* pairs of reading glasses, one right over the other...! Top that.

I get that.
He needs one to tell the time.
The second one, if he takes it off, he will forget to bring it when he goes to get the battery, or will lose track of it.
(Or it has sentimental value and he's loath to take it off for that reason.)

It looks like your first idea was the correct one: He was wearing it to remember to get a fresh battery for it.

Which I ended up doing this week...
