I was waiting for the firebox in the boiler to cool down. The water in the water jacket was very hot, so I started the circulator pump for the boiler to allow the water to cool down as well. I told my father about this, and about continuing to allow the boiler to cool down, before going out to pour hot water into the water trough for the chickens and feed the cattle.

My father happened to go down into the basement, and saw that the circulator pump was on for that boiler. Seeing this, he figured that the boiler must be alright.

So he filled the firebox with wood.

*sigh*

Anyway, I checked the feed door from the inside, because it was cool enough to do that, and didn't see anything that would indicate a major problem. There's a little bit of rust on the outside of the feed door; perhaps the smoke was from the rust getting hot when the boiler overheated yesterday.

So I restarted the blower, and will monitor the boiler during the day.

We may weld another layer onto the feed door (it's plate steel), or get a new door. Either way, when that occurs, we will have to let the boiler cool down. My mother suggests a big red sign on the door during that period, so that my father doesn't put more wood in...

Sympathy. That's the sort of thing my dad would do. Glad to see in a later entry that you have the problem sorted out.
