During our Yule celebration, I somehow forgot to give a special toast that I have been trying to include.

Today, that toast became even more important:

To absent friends.

I don't know its origin, but it was what we in the Corps used at Mess Nights, Birthday Balls, and other gatherings to honor those of our number no longer present. An addition to setting a place at the table for the missing. A tradition and Marines are very traditional beasties.

It is a very personal thing to me in ways I can't explain.

I've known it for many years, and I'm not sure where I got it from. I know that I didn't get it from you, though. ;-)

Like I said, I have no idea where it originated. I learned it in Boot Camp. I've seen it used in the RPG Traveller for the IISS.

I'd say it's very old anyway.
