Gathering eggs
Nov. 10th, 2009 02:27 pmWhen I was younger (much younger), my siblings and I used to challenge each other to see how many eggs we could take out of a nest at the same time. One was easy, two wasn't that hard, and three seemed reasonable, but we also worked our way up to four or five eggs at the same time.
Now that I'm gathering eggs on a regular basis, that old activity has come to mind, and I find myself wondering: How did we put those eggs into the basket after we took them out of the nest? Three eggs can be held in your hand reasonably, and will stay in your hand when you turn your hand over to put the eggs in the basket. I can't seem to get even four eggs to do that, and I'm not even going to attempt five.
It wouldn't be a question I'd spend much time considering, except that some of the nest bays can have upwards of 10 eggs in them overnight, and putting my hand under a cranky hen multiple times does nothing to sooth the hen, and everything to give that hen an opportunity to find out where the edges of my glove are and express its displeasure.
