Wind storm
Dec. 31st, 2008 11:12 amIn Ashfield, someone had a spruce tree fall on her house due to the wind. Don't know the extent of the damage.
In Williamsburg, we saw where a maple tree with a trunk about 9 feet in girth (~3' diam) uprooted and had fallen onto a house, denting the slate roof. There were three tree crews working to clean up. It didn't look like it had broken through, but there was still debris up there at the time that we passed by.
At the farm, one of a set of double doors on the west side either wasn't properly secured, or the hitch wasn't sufficient to hold against the low pressure caused by the wind, and the doors blew open. One door had a window in it, which broke free and fell out (not damaged), probably when the door slammed into the side of the barn. The other door split at the hinges (it's at the corner of the barn, so no wall to slam into and brace it), and was hanging on one hinge when we found it. Both doors have been braced with a 10x10 section of beam to hold them shut until we can make repairs.
I had planned on going up on the hillside yesterday to do some work, but decided that it wasn't a good time to work on downed branches. Today, it's a snow storm (with a possibility of Thunder SnowTM), plus it's cold.
Maybe tomorrow.

Date: 2008-12-31 06:16 pm (UTC)"This is a warning that blizzard conditions with near-zero visibilities are expected " - or so says Environemnt Canada. Anything from 15-35 cms. of snow on the mainland, with up to 45 cms. for Cape Breton. Plus 'hurricane-force' winds.
And, inevitably, more power outages.
At least I have a chili in the slow-cooker, which can be transferred to the propane stove-top when/if the power goes out, so that people can have warm food.
Every New Year's Eve I host the annual get-together - one friend reckons that this is year 25; I've lost count - but I think tonight is going to be rather thin of company. (I swear that even if I wasn't here the party would still be held!)
But I wish you both a very happy and healthy New Year [the mundane one, anyway. ;) ]
