Halloween

Ah, yes, Halloween. The time when members of the SCA have to decide whether or not they're going to dress up in their SCA clothes or go for something more ... creative.

Well, this year I was participating in the Haunted House in the town hall of my hometown, and I decided that dressing up in armor was the thing to do (the HH organizers agreed). So, I had put on most of the armor (except for the helm, arm armor and gauntlets) when I remembered that I was supposed to gather eggs in the afternoon for my father. So, I trooped down to the barn in armor and gathered about 80 eggs in the wire basket, wearing my armor. That's an interesting experience.

The Haunted House was fun, but warm. I was in the first corridor, which was draped with black streams from the low ceiling almost to the floor, making it nearly impossible for people to see. They tended to panic when they bumped into me in there (which was the idea). Occasionally I'd hear someone say something like "It's OK, I'll just hang onto your shirt", and which point I'd say "How about if I hang onto your shirt?" which would give a nice scream. It was a lot of fun.

I didn't get to see any of the other sections of the HH in progress (there were rooms based on the Friday the 13th, Halloween, and Nightmare on Elm Street movie series, as well as one for "Don't answer the phone -- He'll know you're alone" movie (the title is something like that). Dim light, creepy sounds, a chainsaw revving up somewhere. Lots of shrieks -- some from the character players, some from the guests.

I definitely hope to be able to participate in that again.
